There is no clean upgrade path from WHS 1 to WHS 2011 because the first version of WHS is a 32-bit OS while WHS 2011 is 64-bit. Upgrading entails performing a clean install of the OS onto the system. Installation is very straight forward and easy to do. Boot from the WHS installation disc and kick off the install wizard.

You need to remember that when you’re running a web server, you’re basically uploading data to the client/user at the other end, rather than downloading. Most of what you probably need a server for in a home network setting can probably be handled with existing products. Desktop versions of Windows may be crippled by how many connections they're permitted to handle at once, but in a home environment, you will likely never approach those limits. If you do need to get around those limits, it is possible to use Linux to do so, provided you don't run into any hardware-support issues. Even for those who want or need it, Windows Home Server isn't quite baked yet.
